As winter ends and we look forward to warmer weather, let’s be mindful not to neglect our health in all the excitement. Seasonal changes can bring new challenges for our immune systems. It's important to give your immunity a boost as we transition from winter to spring. Here are my favourite foods to do just that!

Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits contain high amounts of vitamin C. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and can help to strengthen your immune system. Some of my favourite citrus fruits include clementines, grapefruits and lemons. These fruits can add some zing and freshness to your daily diet!

Spinach

While all greens are nutritious, spinach is particularly good for the immune system. Spinach is packed with immune-boosting nutrients such as zinc, magnesium vitamin C and iron. It is also a rich source of phytonutrients which can help reduce inflammation in the body. Spinach is an easy vegetable to add to your diet because it whittles down to a tiny amount when cooked. I love throwing a handful of spinach into my smoothies or stews to give my body an extra dose of vitamins and minerals!

Ginger

Ginger is great at helping your body fight infections due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Whenever I feel a cold coming on, I like to make tea by steeping some ginger in hot water with some lemon juice and a touch of honey. This tea is also great for relieving nausea or headaches that can sometimes come with a cold.

Bone broth

There's a reason why chicken soup is the quintessential cold remedy! Bone broth is rich in nutrients and amino acids that are important for building a strong immune system. It’s so easy and affordable to make too! All you have to do is simmer some bones in water with some vegetable scraps for 10 to 12 hours and you will have an incredibly nutrient-dense broth that you can sip on to keep your immune system strong. I like to make a big pot of broth and freeze it in jars so that I have some on hand whenever I am feeling under the weather.

Garlic

Garlic is rich in sulphur-containing compounds such as allicin that can help to reduce inflammation in the body. It also has antimicrobial properties and can help protect the body against bacterial infections. I love cooking with garlic because it makes food much more flavourful and delicious!

Try including some of these foods in your daily diet to build your immunity. Additionally, hydrating adequately, regular exercise, avoiding processed foods and getting enough sleep are also important steps that you can take to ensure that your body stays healthy!
