Sticking to Your Goals During the Holidays

Jan 02, 2023

Happy Passover and  Easter! The holiday weekend is a great opportunity to take a break and spend time with family. However, holidays can also be a time of anxiety. This is especially true if we are trying to achieve health-related goals. But there are ways to enjoy the holidays while staying on track with your movement and wellness goals! Here’s how I manage the holidays and stick to my goals:

Plan ahead

I like to plan my meals and exercise routine ahead of time. For example, if I  know that I  will be indulging at dinner, I try to consume healthier meals earlier in the day. I also like to exercise earlier in the day, so that I get it over with and can enjoy the rest of the day with my family.

Get moving

I love roping my family in for some fun outdoor activities during the holidays. This allows me to get some movement in my day while spending time with loved ones. Some of my favorite family activities include hiking, playing team-based sports, and ice skating. Exercising with my family is definitely more fun compared to working out in the gym on my own!

Don’t skip meals

It may be tempting to skip breakfast or lunch if you know you’re going to indulge at dinner. But this just sets you up for failure! Skipping meals just makes you hangry and more likely to overeat later in the day. Instead, I make sure that I eat my regular meal portions throughout the day. I also ensure that my meals a rich in vegetables and healthy sources of protein to keep me satisfied and energized throughout the day.

Don’t deprive yourself

There is no point in trying to live a healthy life if we can’t enjoy it! This is why I don’t deprive myself of the things that make me happy. I allow myself to indulge a little during the holidays without any guilt or shame. At the same time, I try to incorporate as many healthy habits as I can throughout my day.

Practice mindful eating

Mindful eating is the practice of slowing down and really savoring the experience of eating something. It involves eating without distractions and engaging all our senses to notice the colors, smells, sounds, textures, and flavors of the food we are eating. Mindful eating also means checking in with our hunger cues, non-hunger triggers, and the emotions that we feel when we eat something. I try my best to practice mindful eating on a daily basis, but it is especially important when I am eating foods that I don’t usually consume. It helps me truly appreciate and enjoy my indulgences and to realize when I have eaten enough. Mindful eating is a great practice to try if you want to develop a healthy relationship with food!
