5 Important lessons - Finding Light in the Darkness and Why Its Important

Mar 26, 2026

The last year has been one of deep challenge, reorientation, and testing. I have lost so much all at once—and yet, at the very same time, gained so much as well.

As one of my favourite lyrics of all time says, “Once in a while you can get shown the light—in the strangest of places if you look at it right.”

If I can share anything that might support you through a challenging season in your life, it’s this:

  1. Build yourself a community full of heart-centred, loving, authentic humans. Your people are everything. I have never known this more deeply than I do now. I will never forget who showed up for me—and how. I would not be here today if it weren’t for every single heart-centred human on my path. Yes, there are awful people in this world. But I promise you, there are also people who will restore your faith in miracles, kindness, and hope. Find them. And once you do—hold them close.
  2. Your focus shapes your entire experience of life. As the Grateful Dead says, “Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world.” What you choose to see, what you choose to dwell on, becomes how you feel—and how you feel becomes your life. Focus on what you can control: your thoughts, your reactions, your mindset, your actions. Gently release what you cannot: the past, other people, the external noise. What you focus on grows. Choose wisely.
  3. KNOW YOUR SHAME. I found Brené Brown’s work almost a decade ago during another incredibly challenging time—and it changed my life. I became so deeply committed to it that I went on to train in her work, and in 20 years of practice, it remains the most powerful work I have ever done with people. Brené teaches that everyone experiences shame (except narcissists and sociopaths). And shame is the greatest blocker of vulnerability, courage, and authenticity. If you want to live bravely, you need to understand where shame lives in you—because once you start looking, you will see it everywhere. And you need tools to move through it. This work will transform your life.
  4. Gratitude. A foundational practice. Essential for life. I practice it daily, and it shifts everything. It grounds you, opens you, and reminds you of what is still good. Do it.
  5. Your relationship with yourself sets the tone for everything you receive in your life. If you want things to change, begin there. No one can do this for you. You are 100% responsible—and that also means it is 100% possible, at any time.

If this resonates with you, I would love to hear how.
